Lindos, Greece

Lindos, Rhodes, Greece,is probably my favorite locations.
A picturesque, ancient village, with its Acropolis towering above,
captures the heart of all who visit. It is a great place to visit and
explore because you can walk everywhere and touch everything.

Above the "modern" town is the acropolis of Lindos, a natural citadel or
fortress that was constructed by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, the
Knights of St. John and the Ottomans.  This makes the site difficult
to interpet archaeologically.  What you do notice is the spectacular
views of the site, the surrounding harbors and the coastline.

Just two fun tourists climbing every hill we see!

As you walk through the town you can appreciate
old villas with beautiful doorways....so inviting.

I like this door - let's see if anyone is home.
Funny aside, most doors are open when we
would walk the side streets.  The set up was
interesting - the front door open and there
is the kitchen table and kitchen....people
chatting while cooking and eating.
Bonus.....the aroma's from the kitchen!
The city of Lindos....to the right not in the frame is the Acropolis.
The side streets are so beautiful, charming and welcoming.

Curious how much? 40 - 60 Euros a night for a studio room.
We didn't look - but sounds like a good deal for a night in the
city.  There is night life here where in Kiotari where we stayed
for most of the trip - there was no late night entertainment.....QUIET!
I said welcoming....how about these stairs.  Someone
laid each of these stones in this design....all over the city
you can see these beautiful patterns and intricate designs.
I like this doormat!
I love this!  When I was a kid we had a milk
man that delivered, but a bakery that brings
fresh breads.....it smelled delicious!
Duane takes his hat off to Lindos - showing his admiration and praise for the city!
While some city side streets are residential - others
have stores, boutiques.....better said....SHOPPING!

Funny story about this church in the center of town.  We took
off walking and thought we would see it on our way up to
the Acropolis - but we didn't see it.

Climbing the hill we look down and see our friends
John, Nancy and Ben going into the church.  Wondering,
how could we have missed this?  The answer later!

The Lindos Bay - that is a beach lined up with chairs
and umbrellas for visitors.  10 Euros for the day.
If you don't want to walk you can take a donkey up to the
castle for 5 Euros.  Our friends took the donkey....we walked!

Got our tickets....we're in!
Almost there!  The Castle of the Knights of St. John

The harbor off the bay of Lindos.

Made it to the top!
A guide and information to truly appreciate the history
we are exploring!

The Rhodian trireme (warship) is cut into the rock at the foot of the
steps leading to the acropolis.  On the bow stood a statue

of General Hagesander, the workd of sculptor Pythokritos.
It dates back to 180 B.C. .
To put it to scale....it's huge and still very intricate - incredible.
A tour guide?  Cats...all around!
The Hellenistic ( the Greeks traditional name for themselves)
 staircase....many, many steps.
Definitely not to code....no railing....as I cling to the wall!
On the staircase....a further view of the bay.
The top of the staircase entering the castle - on the way to the Acropolis.
As you enter the castle - doors lead to the staircase -
a collection of different blocks and columns for identification.
This is where your ancient world history kicks in -
Yep, that's a Doric column!
A meeting area that still has some visible organization.
There was a sign that said "Administration".   I hear this
often at school...."Miss Gayle...come to Administration".
I have come to the Administration....no one is here!
Another meeting area and storage area on the way through the castle.

I have always been fascinated with stone on the ceiling.
Although....looking at the ruins.....I run through these rooms.
You never know when one will fall out!

Not exactly portable furniture!

Truly exciting that you can not only see the Acropolis of Lindos,
but climb and explore the entire site.
The remains of the Roman Temple dates back to 300 A.D.
Here I am!  Couldn't resist a little hide and seek!

Sometimes - I was hard to find!
Again, the scale....these columns are huge!
Tried to move it on my own....not a centimeter!
We tried to move one....no luck!
Nancy told us to work together....still not budging!
Okay....don't be too pushy!
The Bay of Lindos from another view above!
Yes....Doric columns!
The city of Lindos below!
From the top you can see towards the city a large opening
in the landscape, a cave.  The dark spots are not shadows,
but trees.  The caves - not much details on them except
that a movie was made here The Guns of Navarone.
Now they are known as the Navarone Caves.
Behind me to the right is St. Paul's Church and the bay
you can just see in the photo in the bottom left.
Behind Duane is St. Paul's Bay  and then the Aegean Sea.
Ben made it to the TOP and took our photo!
Ben!
Climbing, resting and taking photos!

The bay and the Aegean Sea.
One last game of hide and seek!  Peek a boo!
Very tourist type shops....but some cool stuff too!

No taxi - just donkeys!

Many places make fresh juice....a big glass for 1 Euro!
Cheers....a long hike....stopping at a Ganotakis Georgis Crepes.
First, cold refreshing drink and the aroma of our crepe being made!
Perfect balance of flavors - ours was caramel -
surprising how this was so filling....hit the spot!
After our crepe we are  walking throughout the town we are
surprised we can't find the church - where is it?  Then Duane
sees people looking up and there is the steeple.  We have
walked up this street and past it at least ten times.

Lesson:  Look up every once in a while.

The entrance around the corner....well we found it!
Last chance - the donkey stand - just 5 Euros!

Three Words:  Learned so MUCH!
