Happy Birthday UAE! 40 Looks Good on YOU!

We're on our way to Celebrate with the UAE!

      Before 1971 the seven emirates were collectively known as the Trucial States, a name that originated from maritime agreements between the British and the leading sheikhs of the tribes around the southern coast between Qatar and Oman in the first half of the nineteenth century. Economic life of the UAE depended heavily on pearl diving and sea trade in the Gulf and the Indian Ocean. This led to the settlement of different ethnic groups from countries along the trade routes, such as Iran and India. Trade activities with east Africa led to the importation of Africans as laborers in the pearling industry in the late nineteenth century. The African and Iranian ethnic populations have been fully integrated as citizens.  When oil was found first in Dubai, then in Abu Dhabi....it changed everything.  Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Nayhan took steps that created the emirates as we know them today and literally put them on the MAP!
       So, fast forward 40 years and it is celebration time. Think back, where were you  in 1976 when America celebrated 200 years?  This was that big!  Enjoy the pictures below of our day and all the experiences of the adventure.  It was an incredible day!

Cars decorated with regular stickers....yah, that may
not come off that easy.  Good thing the waterless car
wash is just around the corner at the Marina Mall.

In the distance is the Marina Mall Tower. On top is a
revolving restaurant that gives you a panoramic
view of Abu Dhabi.

What would a nations birthday be without fireworks!

At the end of the day - we were running on adrenaline, but
also very tired.   We probably walked over 35 kilometers....easily.
For all of you scrambling to figure that out....over 20 miles.

Preparing for National Day!

With the UAE's birthday around the corner....

it has been a month long celebration!

The seven Presidents of the seven Emirates of the UAE!
Abu Dhabi, Ajman, Dubai, Fujariah, Ras al-Khaimah
and Umm al-Quwain.

Each Advisory Base was to make a decoration to decorate
the school. My class with my Arab teacher partner,
Miss Sahrah made a flag for the school celebration. 

The girls handprints and then they signed their names.

One of our Assistant Principals came and signed.  She
signed her name and the "A" is a woman in a burka!
Great sense of humor when you get to know her.

It is being flown by two helicopters...upper
left hand corner.  It was quite impressive!

A Dish Fit For the Gods!

A fitting title to this blog, as this is a quote from Shakespeare's

Julius Ceasar.  A new restaurant in our neighborhood, although

not new to Abu Dhabi is Shakespeare and Company.  Offering a collection

of cuisines including: American, British, French, Greek, Middle

Eastern will satisfy the most persnickety of palates!

In addition to great meals - they are known for their sweets! 

My favorite is the lemon sorbet served in the lemon - so refreshing!

While all over the UAE, there is a location in
Lexington, KY.  Why the UAE? I can not find
the answer, but I will.  A nostalgic, victorian
escape....you can't help but eat with manners!

It's just so charming!  Everyone loves this place!

The decor is rich and regal, but eclectic as well. I love
the patio, but also enjoy the parlor dining area.  

The sweets counter is HUGE!  You can't come in without
seeing all the goodies.  Should we skip the meal and
go right to the treat?  Awwww....let's do both!

Do NOT recommend if you're on a DIET!

My absolute favorite!  I'll take one, please and thank you!

A little to rich for my taste - but they do like good. 

It's like a boy and girl  version of this desert.  The girls
does appear to be more fancy. 

I have not had this yet....I'm afraid I will like them too much!
